They're commonly used to quickly cool down garages, outdoor patios, covered porches, warehouses and more. Consider these topics before purchasing one: How Evaporative Coolers Work and Their Benefits Best Climates for Evaporative Coolers Evaporative Cooler Sizing Maintenance Key Differences and Features How Evaporative Coolers Work and Their Benefits Residential evaporative air coolers use the natural process of evaporation to cool air. A fan draws in warm stale air, where it passes over water-moistened cooling pads, which immediately cools the air. Then evaporative coolers release this cool moisturized air into your space. ?They immediately cool air up to 25 degrees F. Note: Using an evaporative cooler indoors requires a fresh air source like open door or window. Evaporative Cooler Benefits What makes evaporative coolers better than other cooling options. There are several benefits: Cost-Effective Cooling Evaporative coolers truly cool your air; they don't just circulate it like fans. Traditional air conditioners use compressors and refrigerants, which spike energy bills. Swamp coolers use only water, a fan, and pump to cool your space and cost just pennies an hour to run.

Cooling Media Cleaning and Replacement The evaporative media should be cleaned at least once a month with lukewarm water and a mild detergent to avoid dust, dirt, mold, and mildew build-up. You may eventually need to replace the media depending on which model you purchase. Seasonal Shut Down When you have finished using your swamp cooler for the season, drain the tank and water line, disconnect the water line, and cover the cooler. Operate the fan-only function (if available) for 30 to 60 minutes to completely dry the device and media before storing. Key Differences and Features Swamp cooler designs are pretty similar, but there are a few key differences to keep in mind: Continuous Use: Evaporative coolers with hose hook up allow for continuous use. Just connect your hose for cool air as long as you need it. Browse our selection of swamp coolers with hose hook ups. Oscillating Louvers: If you need to spread cool across a wide space, consider a model with oscillating louvers to move air from side to side. Find a model with oscillating louvers. Casters: Look for evaporative coolers with casters to easily move it to different places and for simple storing during the off season. ABS Plastic: For heavy-duty cooling in industrial spaces, be sure to look for durable models with ABS plastic. Browse our selection of industrial swamp coolers here. In Summary Before you buy an evaporative cooler, make sure you live in a dry enough climate, purchase one that's the right size, and understand how it works. Still Have Questions. Recently, I had an opportunity to make iced coffee using the Coldwave. It is a game changer if you love iced coffee, but are tired of weighing out ice cubes each time you brew. Coldwave Beverage Chiller ( Amazon USA ) Iced Coffee vs Cold Brew Coffee A quick reminder of the difference between iced coffee and cold brew. Cold-brew is far more common these days. It is a lengthy brew process that takes 12-24 hours where coffee grounds are exposed to cold or room temperature water. This method of brewing produces a low acidity coffee with a smooth body. The process of cold brewing a coffee will alter the taste of the coffee being used. It doesn’t taste like a cold version of the same coffee brewed hot. That is where iced coffee comes in. Iced coffee is made by flash cooling coffee as it is brewed. The way this is done is by dividing the water used in the brewing process. About half is the hot water that makes contact with the beans. The other half is measured out in ice cubes. When the brewed coffee makes contact with the ice, it is chilled instantly. And the key here is it doesn’t taste watery or weak. If you get your math right, it will taste very close to a cold version of the same coffee brewed hot. The Problem With Iced Coffee To make a really good cup of iced coffee, you will need to get your math correct. You’ll be weighing both the hot water added to the brew, but also the weight of the ice cubes. If you get everything right, which can take some practice, you’ll get a delicious cup of perfectly chilled coffee that tastes just like the cold version of the same beverage brewed hot. However, if you have too few ice cubes, the coffee might be over-extracted and need additional ice to chill. If you use too many ice cubes, the coffee will likely taste weak.

Many times when we go to brew coffee, we want the process as simple as possible. We don’t want to do any math. We want to wake up. Enter the Coldwave Coffee Chiller Many years ago I lived in a house in Florida without air conditioning. I’d brew a mug of French Press coffee and it would take forever to cool down. I solved the problem one morning by putting the ceramic mug in the freezer and pulling it out after the coffee was finished brewing. When I poured the hot coffee into the frozen mug, the temperature dropped instantly to a manageable temperature. And unlike adding ice to cool my coffee, my coffee never got watery. The Coldwave Coffee Chiller is a grander vision of my frozen mug experiment. The Coldwave is a super-fast beverage chiller. We are going to use it for coffee, but it could be used for tea. You can even chill beer quickly, although you may lose some of the carbonation, so pour slowly. The Coldwave is two parts. First, there is an insert which is a collection of rods that are ideal for freezing. The second part is a pitcher. The initial freeze can take 8 hours. Refreezing is much quicker and just requires an hour after chilling two batches. You can store the pitcher in the freezer, but the makers of Coldwave state this will increase the time it takes to freeze. You can make coffee however you like and then make it iced. I got excellent results with both an AeroPress and Chemex. When the coffee has finished brewing, remove the Coldwave from the freezer. The Coldwave is limited to 16 ounces. Don’t overfill or you’ll create a mess when you add the Coldwave insert. Touch the side of the pitcher to confirm the beverage is chilled. Remove the insert and serve the coffee. Place Coldwave Chiller into Pitcher and wait 90-120 seconds. A good rinse is all you need most of the time. If you want a more detailed cleaning, you can place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Once it is clean enough, put it back in the freezer.

The fresh brewed, flash-cooled coffee has undiluted and undegraded flavor. An integrated appliance includes a coffee brewer and cooler in a single device, and a slide switch or valve allows the user to select hot or iced coffee. Suite 2250, Boston, MA, 02110, US) It also relates to refrigeration or cooling equipment, and to an improved coffee brewing device.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention, referred to herein generally as the “appliance”, is a beverage device characterized by possessing a powered cooling system and a contact-cooling portion having a fluid-contacting part, such as an immersed cooling coil or a cooled fluid-bounding wall or plate (a “cooling body” or “coil”), that is cooled by the powered cooling system and is configured or positioned to cool a hot beverage by thermal contact therewith. The cooling system and body are matched to and operatively coordinated with a hot beverage brewer, and the body is positioned to quickly and effectively chill a small batch, such as an individual cup, or in some embodiments a carafe, of freshly brewed or hot coffee that is passed into or run through the vessel, removing the heat of brewing, and bringing the beverage down to an icy temperature. The “iced” coffee thus produced is a beverage of enhanced flavor, quickly and conveniently prepared without extended refrigeration or use of ice, and has a taste that is free of the dilution, and of the aging or oxidation, found in a conventionally-prepared iced or refrigerator-cooled beverage. Preferably a selector control portion starts the refrigerant compressor when the unit is turned ON, to pre-compress a phase change refrigerant or pre-cool the cooling stage so that the initial cup of brew is flash-cooled or cooled quite quickly. However the appliance further includes operative components such that the freshly brewed hot coffee flows in a short, or integrated or switched flow path, from the first, brewing stage portion, through a second, chiller stage portion, to an output to provide iced coffee with fresh-brewed flavor. In one integrated brewer-chiller embodiment, the brewing and chilling portions are arranged vertically, in a compact unit as upper- and lower-flow-through stages, with the chiller constructed as an evaporator coil suspended in a twist-on removable coffee-receiving vessel or cup.

The invention may also be embodied in a counter-top, chill-only appliance. The chill-only appliance may be configured with a chiller cup mounted, for example on an arm extending out from the appliance so that by moving the appliance the chiller cup is positioned on the cup- or carafe-shelf or support of a common domestic brewer. With such a construction, that is as a chill-only appliance, the chiller may be simply user-actuated with an ON switch, without specific control circuitry for coordination and integration with the brewer. The cooling cup may attach by a twist-mount, bayonet or magnetic coupling to the chiller head. In one embodiment a plurality of moving vanes are positioned centrally within, or around the perimeter of, the evaporator coil and are moved by a motor or gear to deflect or stir the fluid in the vessel thereby accelerating heat removal and assuring fast and uniform cooling of the beverage while operating with a relatively modest refrigeration unit and cooling elements or vessel of modest dimensions. In either case, whether configured to catch the output of a hot beverage brewer or configured as a free-standing chiller appliance, the refrigeration portion of the chiller assembly has a cooling capacity and thermal mass and cooling rate matched to a cup or serving of hot coffee, or to the hot fluid output of the conventional domestic or lunchroom coffee brewer, for example, to a small, medium or large coffee cup size, or in some embodiments to a small carafe batch size (e.g., 20-30 ounce size) of the brewer. When intended as a general purpose counter-top chiller, an embodiment may advantageously be constructed with refrigeration components, such as a compressor and condenser assembly, mounted below-the-counter, connected via flexible lines or rigid tubing, to an above-counter beverage cooling head that includes an evaporator coil which extends into a removably mountable cup or vessel in which the beverage to be chilled is placed.

Preferably the counter-top chiller has a small footprint, and may be similar to a soda fountain frappe machine; as such, the unit may also be used to chill other beverages, such as fruit juice, alcoholic cocktails or wine. An embodiment of the integrated brewer-chiller appliance includes a mechanical or an electrically operated valve for selectively passing a brewed beverage stream to either a direct output (e.g., to a cup for hot coffee), or to the chilling vessel. The control and switching elements may be set such that, when initially switched ON, the refrigeration components are powered; this assures that the compressor, evaporator and condenser have attained an operation-ready state when the flow of hot brewed coffee initially appears shortly after. The invention also contemplates embodiments wherein power switching of the heater and of the compressor motor are effected under selectable or automated control at offset intervals in such a way as to limit the total power draw to below a desired peak domestic appliance power consumption level, for example to under 1200, or under 900 or under 600 watts. In this embodiment, the thermal mass of the cooling body or vessel, and the cooling rate or capacity of the refrigerant system may be optimized to operate effectively by partially pre-chilling the cooling body or vessel so as to brew and flash cool an initial cup, while optionally cooling the subsequent flow of coffee at a more moderate rate as it is brewed. With this arrangement the appliance flash chills a cup of coffee, but lowers the peak or duration of high electrical current draw by taking advantage of the time delays inherent in refrigerant compression and in thermal conduction profiles for contact cooling of the fluid, and the characteristic delayed water heating and hot coffee flow rate of a drip-brewing or k-cup coffee mechanism.

A presently preferred embodiment is a single cup brewer-chiller device having a brewer portion which brews hot coffee, a chiller portion to which the hot coffee may be selectively channeled to be chilled, and a flow selector or valve that either passes the hot coffee directly to an output port, or selectively diverts the hot coffee into the chiller portion before it passes to an output. Operation of the appliance involves brewing hot coffee, and chilling the beverage so produced, wherein the chilling or refrigeration components of the appliance are matched to the thermal load and brew path, being sized, positioned and operated to quickly produce a cup of iced coffee. The upper portion of FIG. 1 shows the brewer stage of the appliance, which is illustrated as following a conventional domestic coffee brewer construction in which water is pumped from a water reservoir 11 by a pump 13 into a heating chamber 12, and the heating chamber is pressurized by an air pump 14 to force heated water along a passage into a brewer stage 15, such as a pod- or k-cup or filter cone coffee brewer, thus making hot, fresh-brewed coffee. The hot coffee so produced passes from the bottom of the brewer stage 15, either directly to a cup 16, or passes into a cooling chamber 18 which cools the coffee to form an iced coffee output. When the user has selected “hot” coffee, the brew may follow a flow path centrally through the cooling chamber, without contacting the cooling element. Such an arrangement is discussed further below, and illustrated in FIGS. 5-8. The lower portion of FIG. 1 schematically illustrates arrangement of the refrigeration components of the appliance, and their interface with the hot coffee brewer stage, and operation to cool an evaporator coil.

So far, everybody in my family is in love with this refrigerator. I cannot believe by how much my energy bill went down. I'll give them 5 stars. I have an oven from them as well so I knew I could trust the name. The looks great and the Freestanding design fits perfectly in my home. When I'd purchased smaller appliances like a microwave and a blender previously, they arrived with some kind of damage and could only imagine what could happen with something as large as a fridge.

I have 3 units here, one completely down and two others not cooling to code along with an ice machine full of slime, and condensers full of trash. I?m putting a condensing unit in the one that?s down along with repairing two leaks on the front side next to the evaporator and cleaning up two evaporator fan motors that are jammed up with old food. Hopefully this afternoon I?ll be able to get into the Coldtech which is a story in its own. I found out that two years ago a friend of a friend of the owner replaced the compressor, did a short vacuum without a micron gauge, then charged it up with 2 cans of 134a he bought from the auto parts store down the street then said ?Well that ought to be enough?. Shaking my head at that one. Now that unit wont cool down past 46 degrees. I guess it comes with the job though. Spend a few days here, get them back up to code then work on getting a PM schedule with them. (They own 8 different restaurants) Could become profitable.Lucky they had that SF-104 on eBay for 40bucks from an old liquidation. But yeah cold tech sucks. Thus why it's not around anymore I dare say.Get it cleaned up and watch pressures, amps, temps. Amps are a good indication if everything is clean charge to 1 amp lower than RLA and see how things go. Charge very slowly and keep an eye on all test equipment. Running pressures (depends on refrigerant) should come into line when you get close to RLA. Try approx. 7 oz to start if it's an evacuated cap tube system, a bit more if there's a receiver. After you know how much refrigerant is in there and it is running good you will have a little positive advertising with the customer. If everything does match up means its a good time to buy a lottery ticket. It's there for a reason. If its a cap tube SH is not fixed. If it has a receiver SC will not get you there. Use the data given unless something has been added, bigger drier or accumulator etc. IMHO.Read earlier entries first too.

The old reefer company screwed up, or they did not pay the old reefer company and they are telling you how bad they screwed up?The old reefer company screwed up, or they did not pay the old reefer company and they are telling you how bad they screwed up? The old reefer company screwed up, or they did not pay the old reefer company and they are telling you how bad they screwed up? They understand that until we get a stable relationship built, all parts are paid before the work starts. The cost they are paying for the parts will be enough to cover my cost on the parts plus extra for supplies and some of my time. If something were to go sour, the only thing I might be out of is just a little bit of time. Their first box I put the condensing unit in yesterday, I turned it over to them only after I completely scraped and cleaned it out. It was clean, quiet and at 35 degrees when I handed them the keys and a printout from my Testo. Going to try to get into that Coldtech today.Amps are a good indication if everything is clean charge to 1 amp lower than RLA and see how things go. If everything does match up means its a good time to buy a RLA. Is not used for charging systems, only needed for setting CPR valve if one is in the system. Temps and pressures are better indicators I mean, all you get is that one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, well, the sky's the limit! Ah the hell with it, if people did their jobs properly I'd be out of work so keep on keepin on. People we chose this line of profession, why not do it properly and not do more harm than good. Anyways PT chart and a good thermometer and accurate set of gauges and a scale so ya know how much to charge for your refrigerant. Ok, I'm done with my rant.

I have a few units that need some tlc. I'm looking for the weigh-in on it. Sticker is unreadable. I have already called Coldtech but they say that unit is not theirs and the old Coldtech went out of business a while back. Thanks. CharlesI have a few units that need some tlc. I have already called Coldtech but they say that unit is not theirs and the old Coldtech went out of business a while back. Thanks. Charles The company that built that box was most likely Gemtech they wet out of business a few years ago. Personally I never go by data tags as most are incorrect, SH and SC. On the money every time Hopefully you luck out and it's a Tecumseh pump in there so you know what flavor refrigerant it takes, a lot of Gemtech compressors were unmarked but can crossed over by the stamp in the compressor housing at your local supply house if they are any good. Hope this helpsI mean, all you get is that one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, well, the sky's the limit! It is a Tecumseh thank god, an AEA4440YXA pump. Apparently the owner had his rear end handed to him by the health department recently.

Just please start giving better advise I know this isn't the pro section so going in depth on charging we won't go, but the data tag is not the end all be all of charging, and once again ya don't charge to ampsI mean, all you get is that one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, well, the sky's the limit! If it does and is obviously a txv system. Fill the sight glass and shoot for your SH.Id never charge by amp draw. What should the amperage be on a cold evacuated system that needs an unknown amount of refrigerant. Of course you would be watching operating pressures, line temperatures, etc. If you let the amps climb up to FLA on start up with no run time to check it out your compressor won't last. If all info doesn't line up as your charging would you load up compressor past rated amps. Checked my previous message saw I typed RLA instead of FLA. Data entry is not my specialty. Sorry. Also that compressor the OP was talking about if it was not a Tecumseh, there would be letters and numbers stamped into the compressor that would mean nothing to you or anyone else except for manufacturer. RLA. Compressors. FLA. motors. What's your point on that. Both mean the same thing. You still don't set your charge using them. Hope this helps.I mean, all you get is that one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, well, the sky's the limit! More data is needed. Why are you guys so set against checking amps. I try and get as much info as possible. Had a small cooler where the problem was low voltage. A fast amp check led to a voltage check which led to a faulty breaker etc. Amp draw isn't the primary source of info but it can indicate when the unit is reaching the max charge without shutting it off then restart with overcharge.Post Them Here All rights reserved. Fortunately, we have some quick commercial refrigeration troubleshooting tips to help identify any problems as soon as possible.

In some cases, an authorized technician will need to service the equipment. No Power When the lights are off and the machine isn’t humming smoothly, a few things could be wrong. By identifying if the power switch is “off” from the onset, you can save plenty of time and heartache before getting into a deep dive of the whole machine. If there is visible damage, such as frays or splits, make sure to replace the cord immediately. Also, an extension cord could be a likely culprit because many aren’t sufficient or safe enough to power large machines. In some cases, they can void warranties by certain manufacturers. Sometimes, a blown fuse or tripped circuit could be causing the problem. Too Warm If you notice the interior of your unit is warmer than usual, check for one of these issues. Keeping your machine up against the wall can cause bad air circulation, preventing it from staying cool. If the unit is in direct sunlight or near hot appliances like ranges and warmers, this also can effect circulation. Routinely cleaning your refrigerator’s condenser coils can help prevent this. That can cause cool air to escape and make the interior warm. However, if the door is not sealing shut, then it could be a broken door gasket. Make sure to find out which type of OEM gasket works on your machine. For instance, when replacing a True refrigeration gasket, there are specific gaskets associated with different manufacturing dates for each model. Like the gasket, make sure that the OEM-replacement latches or hinges are specific to your model. For example, if your machine uses flush hinges, the replacements should be the same. Using offset options in this case could worsen the issue. Try to remove any items that are blocking it. If the temperature still reads high, double check the unit with thermometer to make sure the thermostat is working. If you’re still struggling to maintain the right temperature, then the thermostat might need to be replaced.

Too Cold Believe it or not, a commercial refrigeration unit actually can be too cold. When there is too much ice, your machine’s cycles might be off. In this case, you might need to swap out the defrost timer. If you own an older machine that requires manual defrosting, remember to defrost at least once a year or when ice builds to about a quarter-inch in the interior. This problem definitely requires the help of an authorized technician. Compressor Problems The compressor moves refrigerant throughout your entire machine. These are some common problems that cause a defect in this part. However, if you hear a clicking or clunky motor sound when the compressor kicks on, it could be a sign of imminent failure. Every manufacturer recommends how often you should clean your compressor, but you should generally shoot for at least three times a year. Evaporator Fan Problems The evaporator fan keeps air flowing constantly throughout the unit. If something seems off, check for these issues. Inspect the fan for any evident damage. If there isn’t damage, check if there are loose components nearby that might be rubbing against the blades. This is usually accompanied by a thicker frost buildup. Make sure to clear the drain line before cleaning or removing thick frost. Make sure to consult your manufacturer’s manual for proper cleaning instructions. If the coils are frozen solid, this could be an issue with the unit’s pressure and requires the an authorized technician. If you see it overfilling with water, it most likely means the compressor is broken. Troubleshoot By Manufacturer True Refrigeration Troubleshooting Delfield Refrigerator Troubleshooting Beverage-Air Cooler Troubleshooting Please contact a local authorized service agent who can help with this specific unit and all your commercial kitchen equipment needs. It is good to know that it would be smart to clean off dirty coils. That does seem like a good thing to be aware of when you want to keep yours in good shape.

It seems like it would be smart to clean off the evaporator fan every few months. Patrick’s Day! Sign up today! Visit our store.
